What is the legal status of Anthroposophic medicine in the European Union?
One of the European Union guidelines on Anthroposophic medicine has not yet been developed. However, various efforts are underway to draft a guideline or to incorporate Anthroposophic medicine into existing guidelines.
In six European Member States (Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Finland, Germany, Italy and Italy) and in Switzerland, Anthroposophic medicines have been given formal recognition and a legal basis in medical law. Further legal initiatives are underway in, for example, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden.
The European Parliament resolution, dating from 29 May 1997, on the status of unconventional medicine, specifically mentions Anthroposophic medicine, together with seven other unconventional forms of treatment. Council of Europe Resolution 1206 (1999) - 'A European approach to unconventional medicine' - also mentions Anthroposophic medicine in Document 8435 as one of the most important forms of complementary medicine. Therefore, the term 'Anthroposophic medicine' is sufficiently well known to be incorporated into one of the existing guidelines.
